A pot still Guadeloupe agricole from Papa Rouyo, the Sanblaj ESB drawn from the 2019 vintage and bottled at a lively 48.5%, joining sweet-wine fruit and grassy cane to young wood and a smoky, nutty edge.
Description
Papa Rouyo is a young Guadeloupe agricole producer working from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice under the island's IGP, and unusually for the style it distils on a pot still, which lends extra weight and aromatic depth. This Sanblaj ESB comes from the 2019 vintage at the elevee sous bois tier, meaning at least a year in oak.
Bottled at 48.5%, it balances fruit and freshness against young wood. The nose offers sweet-wine fruit, grassy cane and a sweet edge, the palate stays fruity and grassy with a touch of smoke, and the finish brings dried apricot, grass and a nutty note. The pot still and medium strength give it more body than a typical agricole while keeping it approachable, making it a friendly, fruit-forward choice for anyone taking their first steps into Guadeloupe cane-juice rum.
