A young Guadeloupe agricole vieux from fresh-pressed cane juice, leading with fresh anise, woody warmth and a cool menthol streak, oily on the palate and finishing peppery and green at an honest 45%.
Description
Papa Rouyo is a young estate on Guadeloupe working entirely from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice rather than molasses, the French-island exception to the global rum default. This Vieux 5e Jénérasyon spends five years in ex-bourbon oak and is bottled at 45%, sitting in the IGP space rather than under the Martinique AOC, so the focus stays on cane character carried through the wood rather than any dosage.
Distilled on a creole column run low to keep the green, vegetal congeners in the spirit, it pairs a fresh, almost herbaceous core with roasted and woody notes from the barrel. The aroma turns on anise and toasted oak, the palate stays oily and woody with a cooling menthol lift, and the finish runs peppery with fresh fruit. Dry and snappy rather than sweet, it rewards slow sipping or a stirred agricole serve.
