Papa Rouyo Papa Rouyo 3 Vieux Jénérasyon 2019

Papa Rouyo is a young Guadeloupe distillery building a strong reputation, and this Vieux Jenerasyon is its first aged release, a 2019 vintage matured three years in ex bourbon oak. It is pure cane juice rum, distilled from fresh pressed sugarcane juice on a Creole column still under Guadeloupe IGP, the column blancs laid down to age in house.

Despite only three years, tropical ageing has given it real oak presence. The nose is gourmand with toasted oak letting spice, dried fruit and nuts show alongside a honeyed sugarcane note, the palate turns woody and earthy with tobacco and dried fruit, and the finish stays woody and fresh with an oak and vegetal edge. There is genuine depth and balance here for a young rum, the cane character grounding the assertive wood. Bottled at a clean 46 percent, it is a smart, characterful young vieux for drinkers who like dry Guadeloupe agricole with more oak than the years suggest.
