A young pot-still agricole from Guadeloupe’s Papa Rouyo, fresh cane juice run heavy and aromatic, just over a year in ex-bourbon oak at a bold 55.3% cask strength, leading with a rich honeycomb note, dry and unsweetened.
Description
Papa Rouyo is a young Guadeloupe agricole distillery making its name with pot-still cane-juice rum, and this Eritaj Batch 2 from 2021 is one of its early aged releases, distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice on a pot still and matured just over a year in ex-bourbon oak.
The choice of a pot still rather than the usual creole column gives a heavier, more textured spirit with greater aromatic weight, and the brief oak rest adds structure without burying the cane. The standout note is a rich honeycomb sweetness on the nose, while the cane-juice base keeps the whole thing dry and unsweetened. Bottled at 55.3% cask strength, it is intense and youthful, a distinctive pot-still agricole that rewards a drop of water and shows what a newer Guadeloupe estate can do.
