A sweet Venezuelan column rum from Pampero built for the glass with cola, caramel-led and lightly woody with a smoky, herbal and faintly bitter edge, an honestly basic everyday mixer rather than a neat sipper, soft and accessible at 40%.
Description
Pampero Seleccion is a Venezuelan molasses rum from Licorero del Centro, made in the soft, dessert-leaning style the country is known for. It is column distilled and sweetened, putting it squarely in mixer territory rather than among the more refined Venezuelan sippers.
The nose is mild with caramel and brown sugar, the palate turns more alcoholic and smoky with a roasted, barrel note, and the finish carries herbal, faintly bitter and smoky tones. The clear caramel character is its main asset, and it does its best work lengthened with cola in a simple long drink. This is honestly a basic, caramel-led rum rather than a contemplative pour, well suited to easy mixing but unlikely to satisfy anyone chasing depth or layering in the glass.
