Esencia Rural makes this natural Airén at Quero in Toledo, from very old organically farmed vines on the La Mancha plain. Unoaked and made with minimal intervention, it is light and dry, with green apple, lemon and pear over a chalky finish.
Description
Pampaneo Airén is a natural white from Esencia Rural, the organic estate Julián Ruiz Villanueva built at Quero in Toledo, on the high central plateau of Castilla La Mancha. Airén is the workhorse grape of the region, and old bush vines rooted in the free-draining chalk and clay soils of the meseta give fruit of real substance despite the hot continental climate. Wide day to night temperature swings at altitude slow ripening and hold the natural acidity that keeps the wine fresh. Farming is organic and the wine is made with minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no fining and no oak, so the fruit and the mineral character of the soil come through undisturbed. The result is pale straw in the glass, with green apple, lemon and pear on the nose and a light chalky note from the calcareous ground. The palate is dry and unadorned, with a clean citrus line and a savoury, faintly doughy finish from time on the fine lees. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif, or alongside lighter dishes. It suits fresh shellfish, grilled white fish and green salads.
