Description
Pago de Valdoneje Mencía 2024 is made by Vinos Valtuille in D.O. Bierzo, a single-varietal Mencía from old vines, some over eighty years old. Bierzo sits between continental and Atlantic climates, with good humidity, steady rainfall and relatively cool temperatures that suit slow, even ripening. The old vines carry small crops of concentrated, balanced fruit, and their deep roots reach the slate and clay soils that give Bierzo Mencía its mineral, smoky character. Made in the young joven style with little or no oak ageing, the wine keeps its primary fruit and the grape's natural floral, peppery lift, so the vineyard shows through clearly. The colour is a bright cherry red. The nose is fresh and vibrant, with red and black fruit of blackberry and wild berries, a note of smoke, liquorice and a balsamic, herbal edge. The palate is juicy and medium bodied, with fine tannin, fresh acidity and a clean, mineral finish. Serve lightly cool at around 15C. It suits roast pork, grilled chicken, mushroom dishes and lighter cuts of beef.
