Description
Pago de los Capellanes Crianza is a single-varietal Tempranillo from D.O. Ribera del Duero in Castilla y León. The fruit comes from vineyards around Pedrosa de Duero, La Horra and Gumiel de Mercado, on clay soils strewn with stones. Ribera del Duero lies high on the Castilian plateau near 800 metres, where the wide gap between hot summer days and cold nights drives slow, even ripening, building deep colour and ripe black fruit while keeping firm acidity and tannin. The stony clay drains well and pushes the vines to work for their fruit, concentrating the wine. It is a crianza, aged thirteen months in French oak barrels, where the slow passage of oxygen through the wood rounds the tannin and weaves in spice, dark chocolate and a fine vanilla note while the fruit holds the centre. The colour is deep cherry-red with bluish tints. The nose runs from ripe black fruit to liquorice, tobacco and toast, and the palate is full bodied, structured and long, with firm but ripe tannin. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant for an hour. It suits roast and grilled red meats and game.
