Oxer Bastegieta makes Iraun from Viura in Rioja Alavesa, at Laguardia. Ten months in 500-litre French oak give a textured dry white with orchard fruit, citrus, toasted almond and a creamy, mineral palate with a long, savoury finish.
Description
Oxer Bastegieta trained in oenology and viticulture before settling in Laguardia in 2009 and working the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa under respectful, sustainable farming. Iraun is a single-variety Viura, the traditional white grape of Rioja, grown here at altitude on the limestone soils of the Alavesa. The cool climate and calcareous ground give the wine its fresh acidity and a firm mineral spine, while low yields concentrate the fruit. The wine is aged ten months in 500-litre French oak barrels, a larger format that lets the wine breathe and gain texture from slow oxygen exchange and lees contact while keeping oak flavour restrained. That extended lees ageing releases mannoproteins that build a creamy, rounded mouthfeel. It shows pale gold, with a nose of ripe apple, pear, citrus peel, toasted almond and gentle spice. The palate is dry and textured, with orchard fruit, a nutty note and a clear mineral line running to a long, savoury finish. This is a serious, barrel aged Viura built for the table. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass. Good with roast poultry, white fish and hard cheeses.
