Oxer Buruzagi is a Garnacha-led Rioja from Basque grower Oxer Bastegieta, with Monastrell and a touch of white grapes. Organically farmed and aged ten months in oak, it shows ripe plum, red berries and a wild, herbal edge.
Description
Oxer Bastegieta has made his name in Rioja with wines drawn from overlooked plots, and Buruzagi is one of his reds. The blend is led by Garnacha with Monastrell and a small portion of white varieties, a combination that leans warmer and riper than classic Tempranillo Rioja. The vines sit on the calcareous clay and stony soils of the region, where altitude and cool nights temper the ripeness and keep the acidity in line at 14.5%. Farming is organic. The wine ages 10 months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood softens the tannins and adds a light frame of spice. The nose is distinctive, with ripe plum and red berries over esparto grass, dry hay, dried herbs and pepper, a wild, scrubland character typical of Garnacha grown on poor soils. The palate is concentrated and generous, with ripe fruit, soft tannins and a peppery, herbal finish. The colour is a deep, vibrant red. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees with grilled lamb, roast beef or a spiced stew.
