Description
Paraguas is the project of Felicisimo Pereira Freijido, a fourth-generation Ribeiro grower working the Avia Valley in Galicia. This is single-variety Treixadura, the region's flagship white grape, grown on the granite and sandy soils that define inland Ribeiro. The Atlantic climate here is wet and cool, and the free-draining granitic ground keeps the vines balanced while retaining the natural acidity that gives Galician whites their tension. Fermentation and ageing take place in concrete rather than oak, so the wine keeps its clarity of fruit and gains a faint saline texture from the vessel without any woody flavour. The result is pale straw with a greenish tint. The nose is green apple and pear with white flowers and a touch of citrus peel. The palate is dry and taut, the fruit carried by a fresh line of acidity and a stony, slightly salty finish that reflects the granite underneath. Treixadura gives more body than Albarino, so there is a gentle roundness to the middle. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a standard white wine glass.
