Ramon Jané makes this Penedès orange wine from a tiny 60 year old plot of just 226 Garnacha Blanca vines, blended with Malvasía de Sitges. Fermented on skins and raised in steel, it shows tropical fruit, apricot and orange peel with a herbal edge.
Description
Ramon Jané Viticultor works in the heart of the Penedès in Catalonia, where this orange wine comes from a small parcel of roughly 226 Garnacha Blanca vines planted some sixty years ago, rounded out with Malvasía de Sitges. The site sits on the limestone clay soils typical of inland Penedès, which hold water through the dry Mediterranean summer and lend the fruit a saline, mineral cut. Old vines crop little but ripen evenly, giving concentrated juice with good natural acidity. The wine is made by fermenting the white grapes on their skins, a method that pulls phenolics, colour and structure from the skins into the must and gives orange wine its grip and savoury depth. It is then raised in stainless steel to keep the fruit fresh and the texture clean rather than oxidative. Natural, organic and vegan, with minimal intervention in the cellar. The colour is bright amber. The nose is led by tropical fruit, apricot and orange peel over a herbal background, and the palate is dry and textured with a gently tannic, citrus driven finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass. Good with grilled white fish, fennel salads and fresh goat cheese.
