Description
Ostatu Crianza is a red from D.O.Ca. Rioja made by Bodegas Ostatu in Samaniego, in the Rioja Alavesa to the south of Álava. It is led by Tempranillo at 90 percent, with Graciano, Mazuelo and Grenache making up the rest, from old vines between 20 and 50 years old around Samaniego, Leza and Laguardia at about 580 metres. The vineyards sit on clay-limestone and gravel soils, which drain well and, combined with the Mediterranean climate softened by Atlantic influence, give balanced ripeness with firm acidity. Old vines yield small, concentrated crops, and the cooler Atlantic air keeps the fruit fresh. The 2022 ages twelve months in French oak, which rounds the tannins and adds spice and toast through slow oxygen exchange across the barrel. The wine is deep cherry-red, with a nose of ripe black and red fruits sprinkled with spice and a hint of toast. The palate is medium to full bodied, with supple tannins, bright acidity and a savoury, lightly spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits roast lamb, grilled pork, beef and aged Spanish cheeses.
