Le Volte is the entry red of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in Bolgheri, Tuscany. A blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is aged ten months in concrete and oak, giving fresh cherry and plum fruit, soft spice and an approachable, savoury palate.
Description
Le Volte comes from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, the Bolgheri estate founded by Lodovico Antinori as part of the Super Tuscan movement, which brought French varieties and modern winemaking to coastal Tuscany. The vineyards sit a few kilometres from the Mediterranean, where the maritime climate brings warm days, sea breezes and a cooling diurnal swing that lets the fruit ripen fully while holding its acidity. Le Volte blends the international Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with native Sangiovese, drawing the structure of Bordeaux varieties together with Tuscan freshness and acidity. It is aged around ten months partly in concrete, which keeps the fruit clean and primary without adding wood character, and partly in oak barrels for a measured frame of spice and rounder tannins. The wine is bright red in the glass. The nose shows cherry, plum and red berries with a lift of pepper and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and savoury, with supple tannins, fresh acidity and an easy, food-friendly finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled meats, tomato-based pasta and hard cheeses.
