Ormanni makes this Chianti Classico from Sangiovese on its historic estate near Castellina in Tuscany. A year in oak gives a classic, savoury red of ripe cherry, raspberry and red currant over a balsamic, earthy frame.
Description
Ormanni is a centuries-old estate in the heart of Chianti Classico, between Poggibonsi and Castellina in Chianti, with a winemaking tradition shaped under the guidance of Giulio Gambelli. This is its flagship Chianti Classico, made entirely from Sangiovese, the grape that defines the appellation. The vineyards sit on galestro and alberese, the flaky marl and limestone soils of the Chianti hills that drain well and stress the vine, giving small berries with concentrated, savoury fruit and firm acidity. The continental hill climate, with warm days and cool nights, holds aromatic freshness through ripening. The estate farms organically. After fermentation on skins to draw colour and structure, the wine ages around twelve months in oak, where gentle oxygen exchange settles the tannin and adds a light cedar and spice tone without masking the fruit. The wine shows a vibrant ruby colour, with ripe cherry and raspberry over red currant, dried herbs and a subtle balsamic note. The palate is medium bodied and savoury, with bright acidity and fine, food-friendly tannin, closing dry with an earthy, oak-edged finish. Serve at 16 to 18C with roast and grilled meats, tomato-based pasta and aged cheese.
