Ormanni makes this organic Chianti from Sangiovese with a touch of Merlot in Tuscany. Aged twelve months in concrete tanks, it stays fresh and fruit-driven, with ripe cherry, red berries and a savoury, herbal lift.
Description
Ormanni is a historic Tuscan estate near Castellina in Chianti, here producing a wine under the wider Chianti DOCG that sits across the region. The blend is Sangiovese with a small share of Merlot, the former providing acidity, cherry fruit and a savoury frame, the latter rounding the mid-palate with plum and softer tannin. The vineyards grow on the clay and limestone soils of the Tuscan hills, where good drainage and a warm continental climate ripen the fruit while cool nights keep acidity intact. The estate farms organically. This wine is aged around twelve months in concrete tanks rather than oak, a method that allows a slow, gentle micro-oxygenation through the porous cement while adding no wood flavour, so the fruit stays fresh and primary and the tannin stays supple. The result is a bright ruby red, with ripe cherry, red berries and plum over red currant, dried herbs and a light earthy note. The palate is medium bodied and approachable, with juicy acidity, soft tannin and a clean, savoury finish. This is an everyday Chianti to serve at 16C with pasta, pizza, roast chicken and grilled pork.
