Oriol Artigas made this Canary Island red in the Orotava valley from Listán Negro with a little white Listán and Muscat, raised only in stainless steel. At 11.5 percent it is light and floral, with red berries, a peppery lift and volcanic minerality.
Description
Oriol Artigas, known for transparent low-intervention wines, made Els Perles Jarrita on Tenerife in the Valle de la Orotava appellation, working with the island's native Listán Negro alongside a little Listán Blanco and Moscatel de Alejandría. The Canary Islands sit on volcanic soils, and Orotava's vines grow on dark, free-draining ground at altitude, cooled by Atlantic winds. These conditions give light, fresh, aromatic reds with a distinct mineral signature. The wine is fermented and aged nine months in stainless steel only, with no oak, which preserves the bright fruit and the volcanic character. The small share of white grapes co-fermented with the red adds floral lift and softens the texture. At 11.5 percent it is light bodied and easy. The colour is a pale, bright red. The nose shows fresh red berries and cherry with white flowers, a touch of rose and black pepper. The palate is light and juicy, with fine tannins, lively acidity and a smoky, mineral finish from the volcanic soil. Serve lightly chilled at 14 degrees. It suits roast chicken, pork, charcuterie and lighter dishes.
