Oriol Artigas makes this natural Garnacha at Llinars del Vallès near Alella, just outside Barcelona. Nine months on lees in stainless steel give bright red fruit, a herbal lift and a fresh, juicy texture.
Description
Oriol Artigas is a young winemaker from the Alella area who, after working across Catalonia, settled back in his own territory to make wines of local identity. El Rumbero is a natural red, made without a denomination of origin at Llinars del Vallès, around 15 kilometres from Barcelona. It is a single varietal Garnacha, the warm climate grape that gives generous red fruit and a soft, supple structure. The wine is made without additives in the natural style and aged for nine months on its lees in stainless steel tanks, with no oak. Ageing on the spent yeast lees adds texture and a subtle savoury depth, the dead yeast cells releasing compounds that broaden the mid palate, while the steel keeps the fruit fresh and primary and lets the coastal Catalan character show through. It pours a bright, light red and opens with raspberry, red cherry and a touch of plum, lifted by wild herbs, white flowers and a peppery edge. The palate is light and juicy, with gentle tannins, fresh acidity and an open, drinkable finish. Serve cool, at 14 to 15 degrees. It suits lighter meats, charcuterie and vegetable dishes.
