A young three-year Guatemalan aged rum, caramel and vanilla over fresh young wood and spice, sweet and light on the palate with a slightly hot, pastry-edged finish at a gentle 40%.
Description
Opportune 1791 is an independent bottler presenting this Guatemalan aged rum, a young column-distilled molasses spirit matured around three years in ex-bourbon barrels. At just three years and 40%, it sits at the light, early-maturity end of the Spanish style, where the oak has yet to build much depth and the spirit still reads fresh.
The nose leans on caramel, vanilla and young wood with a dusting of spice. The palate is light and sweet, the youthful oak prominent alongside caramel, with a touch of alcohol heat that betrays its age. There is a pleasant pastry-and-vanilla character for those who enjoy a softer, dessert-leaning pour, though the body is on the slim side and the rum stays gentle rather than rich. An honest, easygoing introduction to Guatemalan rum rather than a deep sipper, best approached for its light, baked sweetness.
