A Dominican solera blend finished in cognac casks, vanilla and pear over nutmeg and roasted wood, the twelve on the label marking the solera rather than an age, sweet and rounded but a step short of the older releases, soft at 40%.
Description
Ophyum Anos 12 Solera is a Dominican column-still rum built on the solera principle, where younger spirit is blended into older casks over time. The twelve points to the solera rather than a fixed age, so it reads as a young, lightly mature blend rather than a twelve-year rum, and a cognac-cask influence rounds out the edges.
The nose offers vanilla, pear, nutmeg and a roasted note, while the palate runs vanilla, soft sweetness, cognac-cask fruit and oak before a sweet, faintly warm finish of caramel and wood. It is fruity and easygoing, sitting at the gentler, sweeter end of the style, though it lacks the balance and depth of the older expressions in the range. At 40% it makes a soft, undemanding sipper for anyone who likes their Dominican rum on the sweet side.
