Oliver & Oliver Vizcaya VXOP

Vizcaya VXOP is a Dominican ron from the blending house Oliver & Oliver, presented here as a single cask. Despite a cane-juice base, it sits firmly in the soft, sweet Spanish-style idiom the house works in, distilled and matured for smoothness and bottled at a gentle 40% from ex-bourbon wood.

The nose offers vanilla, caramel, sweetness and a nutty note, with a round, sweet palate of vanilla, caramel and warm spice and a finish of wood, oak and a mild nuttiness. The whole thing is built around comfort: soft, rounded and easy, with a bakery-like sweetness of butterscotch and caramel and very little in the way of edges. That makes it a friendly pour for newcomers or for relaxed, undemanding sipping rather than a rum to dissect. It leans more toward easygoing pleasure than structure or value, and on those gentle terms it is a tidy, sweet everyday glass.
