A solera built Dominican from Oliver & Oliver, unusually pot still in part, soft and lightly sweet at 40% with caramel, dried fruit, young oak and a brandy edge, an easy neat pour or rocks sipper.
Description
Ron Quorhum is one of Oliver & Oliver's Dominican solera bottlings. A solera is a fractional blending system where the oldest cask is continually topped up with younger spirit, so the 15 on the label marks the oldest component rather than a flat age. Notably, the distillate here leans on pot still character, a step away from the all column norm of the style, bottled at a gentle 40%.
The nose is soft with caramel, dried fruit, young wood and vanilla, and the palate follows into caramel, dried fruit and light oak with a clear sweetness, closing on a brandy like, woody, oaky note. There is a touch of youthful freshness from the younger components in the blend, and the sweetness keeps it easy and dessert leaning rather than dry. It is a pleasant, undemanding sipper that sits comfortably neat or over ice for a relaxed evening glass.
