Description
An official Old Pulteney single malt and bottled at 46%. Pulteney was first licensed in 1826 in the herring port of Wick on the Caithness coast, and it has distilled by the North Sea for two centuries. Water comes from Loch Hempriggs, carried by a lade Thomas Telford laid in 1807.
Distilled in Pulteney's distinctively shaped copper stills on soft Loch Hempriggs water, the make was then aged beside the North Sea for that maritime edge. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, the backbone of the Pulteney style. Without an age statement, the malt feels well aged and softly maritime. Refill oak holds back its sweetness, letting the distillery's coastal character lead. The cool maritime climate is as much a part of the whisky as the cask. Honey, beeswax and sea salt are the threads that run through the range. The distillery has worn the title of the Maritime Malt for good reason.
At 46% it is supple and honeyed. The refill oak lending a light vanilla, with honeyed wax and a saline lift. The texture is oily and coating, the salt threaded through. A long, honeyed finish carries a saline tang. This is a coastal Highland malt from the edge of the country.
