Description
This Old Pulteney was from the independent bottler A.D. Rattray at 6 year old, from 2007, drawn from cask 700744 and bottled at 61.4%. Only 262 bottles were released. Set beside the harbour at Wick in the far north, Pulteney has distilled since 1826. Robert Cumming brought the distillery back to life in 1951 after two decades silent.
The spirit was made in copper stills of singular shape, fed by soft northern water, and matured on the Caithness coast for a salty lift. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the maritime malt to the fore. Younger here, it keeps a crisp, coastal freshness over light honey. Time in oak builds a honeyed weight over the fresh, briny new make. Inver House has built its single malt range around the distillery since 1995. The honeyed, waxy core is the signature of the maritime malt of the far north. Robert Cumming reopened the silent distillery in 1951 as demand for whisky returned.
Undiluted at 61.4%, it is concentrated. Vanilla and a little cream from the barrel, with sea salt and a coastal tang. The mouthfeel is oily, the honey carried on a waxy body. A gently briny finish lingers warm. This is a honeyed coastal malt from Caithness.
