Description
Vino di Contrada Santa Margherita is a single site Grillo from Arianna Occhipinti, one of Italy's most respected natural producers, working in the DOC Sicilia around Vittoria in south east Sicily. The vineyards sit on limestone rich soils under the strong Sicilian sun, hot conditions tempered by coastal breezes and cooler nights that hold the acidity and give the wine its balance despite a moderate 12.5 percent alcohol. Farmed biodynamically, the fruit is worked with minimal intervention and native yeasts. The wine is aged twelve months in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood and extended contact with the fine lees build a broad, savoury texture and a subtle oxidative, nutty complexity rather than obvious oak, in the natural Sicilian idiom. Expect a deep golden colour, a nose of dried apricot, orange peel and almond with beeswax and dried herb, and a dry, textured palate that closes long and saline. Serve at 11 to 13 degrees in a wide glass.
