Description
Arianna Occhipinti farms in south-east Sicily, working organically and biodynamically out of respect for the land, and named this wine after the SP68 road that runs to her vineyards. SP68 Rosso blends the local Frappato with Nero d'Avola, both grown on the calcareous red soils near Vittoria that give Sicilian reds their perfume and freshness. Frappato is a light, aromatic variety that keeps the wine bright and floral, while Nero d'Avola adds a little more colour, body and dark fruit. Despite the Sicilian heat, the coastal position and limestone soils preserve acidity, and native-yeast fermentation with minimal intervention keeps the fruit vivid and the style honest. Ageing is in concrete and older vessels rather than new oak, so the aromatics stay clean and primary. The colour is a bright, translucent ruby, the nose showing red cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate and dried Mediterranean herbs. The palate is light and juicy, with fresh acidity, fine tannin and a savoury, herbal finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 degrees. It is versatile with lighter dishes and can take a chill on a warm day.
