Arianna Occhipinti makes this organic Sicilian red from old-vine Nero d’Avola dry-farmed on the limestone hills around Vittoria. Aged 16 months in large foudres, it shows red cherry, Mediterranean herbs and a savoury earthy edge.
Description
Siccagno is a single-variety Nero d'Avola from Arianna Occhipinti, a leading natural producer in south-eastern Sicily. The name siccagno refers to the dry-farmed method, with no irrigation, so the vines draw only on rainfall and the water held in the soil. The fruit comes from the limestone-rich hills around Vittoria, where the calcareous soil and a hot dry Mediterranean climate, cooled by coastal breezes, ripen the late Nero d'Avola fully while keeping acidity and freshness in balance. The vineyards are farmed without herbicides or synthetic treatments, preserving biodiversity in and around the rows. After a natural fermentation the wine ages sixteen months in large old foudres, neutral vessels that allow gentle oxygen exchange and texture without adding oak flavour, so the fruit and site come through unmasked. It pours a clear medium ruby. The nose shows red cherry and darker berry fruit, dried Mediterranean herbs, black olive and an earthy savoury character. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, with fine grainy tannins, bright acidity and a long savoury finish. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled vegetables, tomato-rich pasta and roast pork.
