Arianna Occhipinti grows organic Frappato near Vittoria in south east Sicily. Aged 14 months in large foudres, this pale, fragrant red shows ripe plum, red cherry and currant with a floral lift and a fresh, savoury, lightly tannic finish.
Description
Arianna Occhipinti is one of Sicily's most admired natural growers, working near Vittoria in the island's south east. Il Frappato is a single variety wine from Frappato di Vittoria, an early ripening local grape prized for its perfume and lightness. The vineyards sit on sandy, lime rich soils over chalk, in a warm but breezy Mediterranean climate cooled by the nearby sea. That airflow and the well draining soils keep the wine fresh and aromatic despite the southern heat, while organic and biodynamic farming and native yeast fermentation let the site speak clearly. The wine is aged for 14 months in large oak foudres rather than small barrels, so the oak adds almost no flavour but allows slow oxygen exchange to soften the texture and stabilise colour while keeping the fruit primary and vivid. It is pale, bright ruby, with a fragrant nose of ripe plum, red cherry, redcurrant and crushed flowers over a peppery, earthy edge. The palate is light to medium bodied, fresh and silky, with red fruit, gentle tannin, lively acidity and a savoury finish. Serve slightly cool, at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits roast poultry, charcuterie and tomato based dishes.
