Perelada makes this Empordà white from Garnacha Blanca and Sauvignon Blanc grown near the Catalan coast. Aged in concrete to keep it fresh, it shows lemon, green apple and elderflower over a saline, mineral finish.
Description
Perelada is a well-established producer in the Empordà, the Catalan region tucked into the far north-east of Spain against the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. This white blends Garnacha Blanca, a local Mediterranean grape, with Sauvignon Blanc. The region is marked by the tramontana, the strong dry north wind that blows down from the mountains, keeping the vineyards healthy and cool and concentrating the fruit. Garnacha Blanca brings body and a saline mineral character, while Sauvignon Blanc adds citrus and aromatic lift. The wine is aged in concrete rather than oak, which lets it soften and gain a little texture through contact with the lees while keeping the fruit clean and fresh, with no woody flavour to get in the way. It is pale straw in the glass, and the nose leads with lemon, green apple and a note of elderflower over white flowers. The palate is crisp and dry, with a saline, mineral freshness and a clean finish. This is a wine to drink young and cold. Serve it at 8 to 10 degrees with grilled fish, seafood or a summer salad.
