Description
This Limited Edition was sold only at the distillery, a visitor bottling Oban released in a run of 6000 bottles. It comes from the small distillery at Oban founded by the Stevenson brothers in 1794, one of the oldest distilleries still running in Scotland, in the harbour town that grew up around it.
The make carries no age statement and was filled into ex-Bourbon American oak, the soft wood that flatters Oban's light, fruity spirit. That spirit is distilled slowly through the lamp shaped stills and condensed in the outdoor worm tub condensers, the prolonged copper contact tempering it into the distillery's mild, coastal make. Visitor only releases like this give the distillery shop something the wider market does not have, and the raised strength shows a little more of the spirit than the gently reduced standard bottling does.
Bottled at 48%, a little above the standard strength, it is fresh and clean. The oak's broken down lignin lends vanilla, the lactones give coconut and cream, and the cask draws out honey, orchard fruit and citrus over Oban's clear coastal brine. A thread of gentle smoke trails a long, coastal finish.
