Description
O Reizinho makes rhum agricole on the island of Madeira, one of the few places legally entitled to the term, from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice. This six year bottling from 2015 is matured in Madeira wine casks and bottled at cask strength, 52.6 percent, an intense and uncompromising rum.
Column distilled and given full Madeira cask treatment, it is dry, tannic and deep: chocolate, dried fruit and raisin on the nose, with roasted nuts, sugarcane and spice on a palate marked by a winey, mineral and faintly sulphuric edge. The finish carries dried fruit, prunes, honey and oak. The Madeira influence is unmistakable, lending a sherried, savoury complexity that can divide opinion thanks to its musty, earthy side. Best sipped neat with time in the glass rather than rushed.
