A cask-strength 3 Year Old Madeiran agricole from O Reizinho, finished in Madeira casks, with candied fruit and figs on the nose and a strong, hot palate giving way to red fruit at 54.8%.
Description
O Reizinho is a small Madeira producer making rum from fresh sugar cane juice, on one of the few islands outside the French territories permitted to use the term rhum agricole. This three-year expression is matured in Madeira casks and bottled at cask strength, 54.8%, a robust young agricole.
The column-still spirit keeps a cane-led core while the Madeira cask lends a wine-touched, fruity richness. The nose leans on candied fruit, red muscat grape and figs, the palate is strong to the point of being almost aggressive at full proof, and the finish brings red fruit and heat. Unsweetened, it is an intense and youthful pour where the cask fruit and high strength dominate, one for drinkers who enjoy a forceful young agricole and don't mind a little fire, rewarding a drop of water to open up the fruit beneath.
