Description
Pago de los Capellanes, the Ribera del Duero red-wine estate, makes O Luar do Sil Vides del Corgomo in D.O. Valdeorras, in Galicia, from the Godello grape. The family set up their O Luar do Sil winery in 2014 to work with Godello in this cooler, greener part of north-western Spain. The vines grow on slate and granite soils along the Sil valley, where the stony ground and Atlantic-influenced climate give the grape freshness, body and a clear mineral streak. The wine is aged for eight months on its lees in barrel. Time on the lees builds texture and a gentle, bready depth, while the barrel adds a light frame and lets a slow, controlled exchange of air round the wine out without dominating it. It shows bright pale gold, with a nose of freshly baked bread, warm stones, ripe pear, white peach and a touch of lemon. The palate is dry and medium bodied, with orchard and citrus fruit over a saline, mineral base and a long, precise finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white-wine glass.
