Nusa Caña Tropical Island Rum

Nusa Cana hails from Indonesia and draws on the island's batavia arrack tradition, a column-distilled molasses rum bottled at a light 37.5%. It leans fresh and funky rather than rich or aged, with a cane-driven character that sets it apart from standard bar whites.

The nose is sugarcane, grass and ester with a fresh lift, the palate brings sugarcane, banana, ester and a thin body, and the finish stays thin and funky with that distinct arrack edge. A little smoked-bacon note and plenty of fermentation character give it interest. Some find it surprisingly sweet on the palate despite the production, though sugar is not declared. At a low strength and a friendly price, it lands as a solid, characterful mixing rum, well above many bar standards at the price and especially at home in a Mojito or Daiquiri where its freshness and funk come alive.
