Description
Celler Piñol is a family winery founded in 1947 in Batea, in D.O. Terra Alta, west of Tarragona. It champions the region's local grapes, and this white leads on Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo, rounded out with Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Terra Alta is a high, inland appellation where hot Mediterranean days meet cool nights coming off the hills, and this diurnal swing preserves acidity and aromatics in Garnacha Blanca, a variety that can otherwise turn broad and low in acid. The limestone-influenced soils drain freely and add a mineral backbone. The wine is young and unoaked, made to capture fruit and freshness, so tank raising and an early bottling keep the aromatics bright and the palate clean. Sauvignon Blanc lifts the green, herbal top notes while Viognier adds a touch of stone fruit and perfume. The colour is pale straw. The nose shows lemon, green apple, white peach and white flowers over a dried-herb, Mediterranean edge. The palate is dry and fresh, with lively acidity, a light texture and a clean, mineral finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees.
