Celler Piñol, a family winery in Batea, makes this organic rosé in D.O. Terra Alta from Garnacha and Syrah. At 14 per cent it is a fuller, fruit-driven style, with ripe red berries, cherry and a peppery edge.
Description
Nuestra Señora del Portal Rosado comes from Celler Piñol, a family winery founded in 1947 at Batea, in the hills of D.O. Terra Alta west of Tarragona. The estate works 17 hectares and farms organically. Terra Alta is one of the warmest and highest corners of Catalan wine country, and that combination of altitude and a hot, dry Mediterranean climate gives ripe fruit with enough night-time cooling to keep the wine fresh. Garnacha leads the blend with ripe strawberry and weight, while Syrah adds colour, cherry depth and a peppery, herbal lift. The grapes are pressed and the juice fermented cool in stainless steel to hold the aromatics and the bright pink colour, with no oak so the fruit stays clear. The wine is a vivid pink. The nose offers ripe red berries and cherry, with black pepper and a touch of dried Mediterranean herbs. The palate is fuller than most rosés at 14 per cent, fruit driven and rounded, the ripeness carried by fresh acidity to a savoury finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees. It suits grilled meats, roast chicken and richer fish.
