Noval Colheita 2005 is a single-vintage Tawny from Quinta do Noval in the Douro Valley, a house dating to 1715. Made from native grapes and matured in cask, it shows the dried fruit, marmalade and nutty depth of long wood ageing.
Description
Noval Colheita 2005 is made by Quinta do Noval, a Douro estate founded in 1715 and a leading name in Vinho do Porto. A Colheita is a Tawny from a single harvest, here 2005, aged for many years in cask before bottling, as opposed to a blend of vintages. The wine is built from the region's native grapes, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Sousão, grown on the schist terraces of the upper Douro, including parcels descended from the two hectares that survived the phylloxera plague at the estate. After fortification to 21% alcohol arrests fermentation, the wine spends extended time in seasoned wood, where slow oxidation through the staves develops the dried-fruit and nutty character that defines aged Tawny while concentrating the wine through gentle evaporation. The colour is amber-russet. The nose shows dried apricot, orange marmalade and date over walnut. The palate is concentrated and smooth, carrying caramel and nut through a long, warming finish. Serve lightly chilled at 13 to 15C in a small glass. It suits nutty cheeses, dried-fruit tarts and caramel puddings.
