Description
Nocheluna is a sotol, a northern Mexican spirit distilled from Dasylirion, the desert spoon plant, which is not an agave but a separate desert species. This bottling comes from a collaboration between sotolero Ricardo Pico of Clande, Ivan Saldana of Montelobos, and musician Lenny Kravitz. It is made from Dasylirion leiophyllum, a species of limestone grassland and woodland that lends a mineral, savoury backbone. Sotol holds its own Denomination of Origin, granted in 2002.
Like mezcal the hearts are roasted, milled and twice distilled, which is why sotol can read roasted and rustic while remaining botanically unrelated to agave. The nose offers spice, dried fruit, caramel and honey, while the palate turns mineral, fresh and typically sotol dry, with citrus fruit, cocoa and a cool mint lift. Bottled at 43%, it leans into the desert spoon character.
