The Nittnaus brothers farm biodynamically in Gols, in Austria’s Burgenland. Their Pinot Noir Selection is a light, fresh red at 12.5 percent, showing red cherry, wild strawberry and a floral, earthy lift.
Description
Gebrüder Nittnaus is run by brothers Hans Michael and Andreas in Gols, on the eastern shore of the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland, where the family has grown vines for over three centuries and now farms biodynamically. The warm Pannonian plain is moderated by the large, shallow lake, which stores heat and reflects light while keeping the climate from tipping into excess, conditions that let Pinot Noir ripen fully yet hold its perfume and acidity. This Selection is a lighter framed red at 12.5 percent, made to show the grape's bright fruit rather than weight or heavy oak. The wine is pale to medium ruby, with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and redcurrant lifted by rose petal and a fresh, earthy minerality. The palate is light bodied and supple, with low to moderate tannin, crisp acidity and a clean, savoury finish. Biodynamic farming and gentle handling keep the fruit transparent and the texture fine. Serve slightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees. It is at its best with roast duck, herb roasted chicken and mushroom dishes.
