The Nittnaus brothers make this Grüner Veltliner in Burgenland, Austria’s sunniest region, beside the Neusiedler See. Farmed biodynamically, it is a fresh, peppery white of green apple, citrus and stone fruit.
Description
This Grüner Veltliner is made by brothers Andreas and Hans Michael Nittnaus in Burgenland, on the shores of the Neusiedler See in eastern Austria. Burgenland is the country's sunniest region, with more than 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, and the large, shallow lake moderates the climate by storing daytime heat and releasing it slowly, giving a long, even ripening season. The estate is farmed biodynamically. Grüner Veltliner, Austria's signature white grape, is grown here for a fresh, textural style rather than a heavy one, and the wine is made to keep its acidity and varietal character, with no oak. Grüner's hallmark is a mix of orchard and citrus fruit with a distinctive white pepper and green herb note, and the sunny but lake cooled site gives ripeness balanced by freshness. The colour is pale lemon with green tints. The nose shows green apple, lemon and white peach lifted by that peppery, herbal edge. The palate is dry and crisp, with citrus peel bite, a light texture and a clean, savoury finish. Serve chilled at 9 to 10 degrees. It is a very flexible food wine.
