Description
Ester Nin and Carlos Ortiz make Nit de Nin Mas d'en Caçador in Porrera, in the heart of D.O.Q. Priorat. The blend of Garnacha and Cariñena comes from old vines around ninety years of age, planted on costers, the steep terraced hillsides typical of the region. Priorat's defining soil is llicorella, a slate and quartzite schist that forces roots deep in search of water and lends these reds their mineral, stony signature. The vines are farmed biodynamically and organically. Old, low-yielding vines on poor soil give tiny, concentrated berries, the source of the wine's depth and structure. Vinification and ageing in wood let the tannins settle and gain complexity through slow oxygen exchange while retaining freshness. The wine is deep and saturated, with aromas of ripe cherry and raspberry, dark plum, Mediterranean herbs and a clear graphite minerality. The palate is full and powerful at 15 percent, with concentrated fruit, savoury depth and firm, fine-grained tannin running long. It has the structure to age. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant for an hour. It suits roast lamb, beef and game.
