Description
Niepoort Vinhas Velhas Branco is a white blend of Maria Gomes and Bical from old vines in DOC Bairrada, made by the Niepoort family, founded in 1842 and long known for Port and still wines. Bairrada lies close to the Atlantic in central Portugal, and the maritime climate brings cooler temperatures, higher humidity and a long, gradual ripening that preserves acidity and fresh aromatics. The old vines here are grown on the region's characteristic clay-limestone and sandy soils, which add structure and a mineral cut. The wine is aged in wood, with the neutral barrel giving slow oxygen exchange, texture and length rather than oak flavour, in keeping with Niepoort's blend of traditional Portuguese technique and restraint. The colour is pale straw. The nose is fresh and lifted, with lime, green apple and white peach over fresh herbs and a saline note drawn from the coastal setting. The palate is dry, lean and mineral, the citrus fruit carried by high Atlantic acidity to a clean, savoury finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees.
