Dirk Niepoort makes Turris in the Douro from a field blend of indigenous Portuguese grapes led by Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Aged twenty months in oak, it shows dark berries, plum and pepper over a savoury, schist-driven minerality.
Description
Niepoort is a fifth-generation family producer in the Douro valley of northern Portugal, where Dirk Niepoort has done much to establish the region's reputation for still wines alongside its famous Port. Turris is a red field blend of indigenous grapes, led by Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca with Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Trincadeira. The Douro's steep terraces are built on schist, a layered rock that forces vine roots deep in search of water and stamps the wine with a savoury, mineral character. The hot, dry summers ripen the fruit fully, while altitude and cool nights preserve freshness. The wine is aged for twenty months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood rounds the tannins and adds a layer of spice while keeping the fruit defined. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows dark berries and plum, black pepper and dried herbs over a stony, earthy base, with oak spice behind. The palate is medium to full bodied and structured, the tannins firm but fine and the finish long and savoury. Serve at 17 degrees, decanting briefly. It suits roast and grilled red meat.
