Description
Niepoort Ruby Dum is a ruby Reserve from Niepoort, the Douro house founded in 1842. It is blended from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and other traditional varieties grown on the schist terraces of the Douro. The valley's hot, dry summers ripen the fruit to high sugar, and fermentation is arrested with grape spirit to fortify the wine to around 19.5 percent. Where a tawny is aged oxidatively to fade and mellow, a ruby is matured in large old wood that limits oxygen contact, so the wine keeps its deep colour and fresh, primary dark-fruit character. This one spends 36 months in foudres, large neutral casks that hold the fruit while rounding the texture. The wine is dark red in the glass, with vibrant aromas of blackberry, cherry and plum. The palate is youthful and balanced, with good extract, a peppery edge and an almost mineral line that keeps it drinkable. Serve lightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees in a small glass.
