Description
Niepoort is a Douro shipper founded in 1842, run today by the fifth generation of the family. This Colheita is a Port from the single 2012 vintage, built from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and other traditional varieties grown on the schist soils of the upper Douro. The valley's hot, dry summers and steep terraced vineyards push the grapes to full ripeness and high sugar, and fermentation is arrested with grape spirit to leave the wine sweet and fortified at around 20 percent. Unlike a ruby Port, a Colheita is aged for years in cask before bottling, so slow oxidative contact in 550-litre port-aging pipas drives the development of tawny colour, mellowed tannins and aldehydic depth. The result is amber-edged in the glass, with a nose of ripe plum, raisin and dried fig lifted by subtle spice. The palate is deep and balanced, carrying dried fruit, cinnamon, walnut and toffee through a long finish. Serve lightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees in a small glass.
