Description
Nicolas Reau makes Attention Chenin Mechant in Anjou, in the southern Loire, from Chenin Blanc, the region's great white grape. Reau took over vineyards in the Thouarsais in 1998 and farms with a low intervention, organic approach. The soils of southern Anjou are largely schist and slate, which warm quickly and drain well, giving fresh, mineral wines with a clear stony character. This bottling is a young, fresh style, aged on its lees, the spent yeast cells left in contact with the wine to add gentle texture and a savoury note. Native yeast fermentation and minimal handling keep the wine direct and true to its site. The colour is pale straw, with green apple, pear and quince on the nose over a chalky, slightly herbal edge. The palate is dry and lightly textured, with orchard fruit, a soft grip and a long, mineral finish carried by fresh acidity. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees.
