Description
Coteaux Bourguignons is Burgundy's regional appellation, and this red comes from Domaine Gauffroy, an estate better known for its Meursault whites, made by Nicolas Gauffroy from old Pinot Noir vines the family has farmed since 1938. Old vines run deep, draw a steady supply of water and nutrients and give fruit of good concentration and balance even at the regional level. The Pinot Noir grows on the limestone and clay soils of the Cote, free-draining ground that lends the wine its red-fruited freshness and mineral lift. Burgundy is cool and continental, and the wide swing between warm days and cool nights ripens this thin-skinned grape gently, holding acidity and floral aromatics. The wine is bottled young with little or no oak, which keeps the fruit bright and the body light and easy. Farming is sustainable. The colour is light ruby. The nose shows fresh cherry, red berries and red currant, rose and a touch of turned earth. The palate is light bodied with crisp acidity, soft tannins and a clean, juicy finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15C. It suits roast chicken, pork and mushrooms.
