Viñedos Somoza makes this Godello in D.O. Valdeorras, aged eight months on its lees in barrel. Grown on slate in Galicia, it is a textured white of white peach, pear and white flowers with a gentle, creamy weight.
Description
Viñedos Somoza is a Galician estate in Valdeorras that has worked to revive the area's indigenous grapes, chief among them Godello. Neno is its fresher expression of the variety, grown in the upper Sil valley on the slate and schist soils that define the appellation. That stony, mineral ground drains well and roots the vines deep, lending the wine a clear mineral line, while Valdeorras sits inland and enjoys warmer, drier conditions than coastal Galicia, so the fruit ripens to a riper, stone-fruit profile with good body. The wine spends around eight months on its fine lees in barrel. This does two things: the slow contact with spent yeast releases mannoproteins that build a creamy, rounded texture, and the gentle exchange of oxygen through the wood softens the wine and adds a subtle savoury depth, all without heavy oak flavour. Expect a straw-yellow colour with golden hints, a nose of white peach, pear and white flowers with a touch of almond and honey, and a dry, medium-bodied palate with creamy weight and a fresh, mineral finish. Serve chilled at around 11C. Godello's texture makes it a fine food wine.
