A single-cask Martinique XO from Neisson, six years on a heavily charred ex-bourbon barrel at 54.9%, where fruity apple and oak give way to roasted coffee, leather and a dry, smoky-edged finish.
Description
Neisson, the small 1931 family estate at Le Carbet, released this Straight From The Barrel as a single cask from its Chai Mainmain ageing cellar, a 2018 distillate drawn at six years. Made from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice on a creole column and matured tropically in Martinique, it qualifies as an AOC XO, where the island's high angel's share gives a six-year rum the depth of something older.
Drawn from a single, deeply charred ex-bourbon barrel and bottled at full proof of 54.9% with no added sugar, it opens light and fruity with apple and oak, then turns dark across the palate: roasted notes, coffee and a burnt, woody intensity from that toasted cask. The finish stays dry with leather, roast and a fruity echo. This is a serious, wood-shaped agricole for drinkers who like their cane spirit at strength and on the roasted, savoury side, sipped slowly and neat.
