A cask-strength single cask from Martinique’s Neisson bottled at 49.2% for the Spa rum show, five years in ex-bourbon yielding nutty, brown-sugar fruit up front and a round, dry, roasted oak palate with coconut and vanilla.
Description
Neisson Special Salon du Rhum de Spa 2012 is a single-cask aged agricole from Neisson, the small family distillery founded in 1931 and a longstanding favourite among agricole drinkers in Martinique, bottled for the Belgian rum show at Spa. Distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice and drawn from one ex-bourbon barrel, five years of tropical ageing punches above its number.
The nose is nutty and fruity with brown sugar and a young-wood edge. The palate is round and dry with roasted, woody notes, and the finish brings nuttiness, coconut, vanilla and leather. This is the spice-forward, drier side of aged agricole rather than anything sweet, the bourbon cask layering vanilla and toast over Neisson's clean cane core. Bottled at cask strength, 49.2%, it stays approachable in proof while keeping single-cask intensity. A characterful pour that shows how quickly good agricole matures in Caribbean heat, fine neat or in a stirred drink for those who like aged French-island rum.
